"GRIN ist eine Band, die aus den Süden Deutschland kommt. Genauer gesagt kommen die vier Herren aus Stuttgart. Auf dieser CD blasen sie uns sechs extrem harte Songs um die Ohren. Sechs Songs voll von fiesen Gitarrenrhythmen, krassen Schlagzeug Breaks und hasserfülltem Gesang. Stillmässig gibt es nur einen Anhaltspunkt, dieser steht dafür ganz klar im Mittelpunkt. MESHUGGAH heisst der musikalische Vergleich. Keine andere Band bei Mordor hat es je geschafft so kranke Songs zu schreiben. Es sind die Typischen abgehackten Gitarrenriffs die hier dargeboten werden. Riffs die von den meisten nicht wirklich aufgenommen werden können. So kann ich mir gut vorstellen das die Zuschauer bei einem GRIN Konzert recht durcheinander im Raum stehen. Kaum hat man einen Rhythmus mal halbwegs begriffen und beginnt freudig mit dem Kopf zu wackeln, da hat die Band natürlich schon wieder den nächsten haaressträubenden Beat auf Lager. Bis her hat das erst MESHUGGAH geschafft, GRIN wandeln auch auf diesen Pfaden. Besonders fies, empfinde ich den Anfang von zweiten Song. Ich habe ihn mittlerweile schon mindesten 10 mal gehört, aber ich wundere mich immer noch wie man so was spielen kann. GRIN legen nicht nur einen gewaltigen Rhythmus vor. Sie können durch aus auch in punkto Geschwindigkeit und Technik mit halten. Das Zusammenspiel von Gitarren, Bass und Schlagzeug ist grandios. Dies ergibt einen verdammt fetten Sound, der einfach alles weg haut was sich im in den Weg stellt. Das ganze ist extrem Aggressiv und haut mächtig rein. Der Sehr Hasserfüllte Gesang rundet das ganze ab. Stimmlich ist es eine Mischung aus Tiefen Death Vocals und einem Schuss Thrash. Das ganze harmoniert Perfekt und ich ziehe den Hut vor den vier Musikern! Ein Grandioses Album das Musikalisch und produktionstechnisch voll überzeugen kann. Ein Album für alle hartgesottenen unter euch. Ein absoluter Tipp!!!!"

"These guys do have a future ! Even though they don’t have a label yet, everything is so professional in this release (printed cd, full-colour booklet, studio sound) that everyone would imagine it is an official one! And for what concerns the music.... high-class Death/Thrash that leaves you breathlessly asking for more! The four musicians’ technique is simply brilliant, they dare in ultra-complicated passages and never fail... The complex songs’ structure and perfect amalgamation of all instruments reminds me strongly of the gods Death... also the voice is not so different from the one of defunct Chuck, though this German vocalist is more deep and less sharpening. Anyway this band is fucking great and I’m fucking amazed. Maybe this kind of music can’t give me the emotions I feel listening to Black Metal, but it’s good anyway to see there are such interesting bands in the Underground scene... "It is always an interesting experience to hear a self-produced CD because two thoughts are travelling my mind: 1. they don't have to act under the pressure of label expectations and 2. they probably haven't hit the styles most labels are looking for these days.

Grin probably fulfil both of these points, but that doesn't mean that they are only a mediocre metal band. By no means. Decision 120 is the most refreshing CD I have heard this year so far, and it's already close to November. The dark cover layout (so dark you nearly can't recognise anything) and the band name should already hint into the right direction. Grin was also an album by the Swiss prog metal legend Coroner, and even if Grin (the band) are not sounding exactly the same, they also play a kind of fierce progressive metal... something which has nothing to do with what most people understand by that name nowadays. Especially the drumming is so fierce and yet so technical that it's a pleasure to listen to the rhythm alone. As if late Eighties German school prog metal (Mekong Delta, early Sieges Even) have been transferred to the power school of the new millennium. Add a bit of VoiVod, and you are nearly there.

Does this mean that Grin are unoriginal. Well, maybe they don't reinvent the genre of progressive thrash metal, but they have chosen a sub-genre which has proven extremely unpopular with the music industry, and thereby show a huge amount of courage. Decision 120 is not an album you can listen to with one ear only. It takes both of them, and a lot of attention, too, to get all the details and finesse of this nearly-masterpiece. Because beware, there may only be six songs, but most of them are longer than your average metal song, giving Grin enough room to show off their technical abilities, but also their high songwriting skills.

The only reason I am not giving the maximum rating of 10 points is because I expect even more of this band... maybe adding jazziness to the progginess, and staying as brutal as ever. But that's just my opinion. 9 Euro plus postage is also a very social price. "
